Equipment

  • 8x8 oven-safe pan
  • mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 6 cups frozen mixed berries
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 3 tbsp sugar for berry mixture
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter cut into 1-inch pieces
  • ¼ cup + 2 tbsp sugar for topping
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt
  • 1 cup quick-cooking oats
  • ½ cup old-fashioned oats

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray an 8x8-inch baking pan with nonstick spray.
  • In a large bowl, combine frozen berries, cornstarch, lime juice, and 3 tbsp sugar. Stir until the berries are evenly coated.
  • Pour the berry mixture into the prepared baking dish, ensuring all the sugar and cornstarch mixture is included.
  • In a separate bowl, mix quick-cooking oats, old-fashioned oats, ¼ cup + 2 tbsp sugar, brown sugar, and salt.
  • Add cold butter pieces to the oat mixture and cut the butter in using your hands or a pastry blender until crumbly and well incorporated.
  • Evenly sprinkle the oat mixture over the berries in the baking dish.
  • Bake for 55 to 60 minutes until the berries are bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
  • If the topping browns too quickly, cover the dish with aluminum foil and continue baking.
  • Let the crisp cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Fresh lime juice is recommended for brightness. Use both quick-cooking and old-fashioned oats for the best texture, and cold butter chunks for a crispier topping. For a gluten-free version, use certified gluten-free oats. Substitute unsalted butter with coconut oil for a dairy-free option.
