Ingredients
  

  • 1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced
  • ΒΌ cup sugar
  • 10 ounces sponge cake dessert cups (12 cups total)
  • 1 6.5-ounce can whipped cream
  • Optional toppings powdered sugar, lemon zest, or other berries

Instructions
 

  • Wash and dry strawberries, reserving 6 whole berries for garnish. Hull and slice the remaining berries.
  • Combine sliced strawberries and sugar in a container. Cover and refrigerate for 15 to 30 minutes until the sugar dissolves.
  • Place 6 dessert cake cups on a serving plate and add whipped cream to each cup.
  • Spoon the macerated strawberries over the cream in each cup.
  • Place a second cake cup on top of each stack.
  • Finish each shortcake with additional whipped cream and a whole strawberry.

Notes

Assemble immediately before serving to prevent the sponge cake from becoming soggy. Fresh strawberries are preferred over frozen for the best texture.
