Equipment

  • Bamboo skewers
  • saucepan
  • grill
  • oven
  • baking sheet
  • parchment paper

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into 1-inch cubes
  • Bamboo skewers

Sauce

  • ¼ cup butter
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • ½ cup honey
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ¼ cup water for slurry

Optional Additions

  • bell peppers, onions, or zucchini for adding to skewers
  • chili flakes for spice

Substitutions

  • chicken thighs for juiciness
  • tofu for vegetarian option
  • tamari or coconut aminos for gluten-free diets
  • maple syrup or agave nectar to substitute honey

Instructions

  • Soak bamboo skewers in water for 30 minutes to prevent burning.
  • Preheat grill to medium-high heat or oven to 400°F (200°C). Thread chicken cubes onto skewers, leaving space between pieces for even cooking.
  • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Whisk in honey, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  • Dissolve cornstarch in water to create a slurry, then stir it into the sauce. Cook for 2-3 minutes until thickened, then remove from heat.
  • Grill skewers for 5-7 minutes per side until fully cooked and slightly charred, brushing with sauce during the last few minutes. Alternatively, bake skewers on a parchment-lined sheet for 20 minutes, then brush with sauce and broil for 2-3 minutes to glaze.
  • Let skewers rest for a few minutes before serving. Serve with extra sauce on the side.

Notes

  • For deeper flavor, marinate chicken cubes in half of the honey garlic sauce for 1-2 hours in the refrigerator before skewering. Add vegetables like bell peppers or onions between chicken pieces for a balanced meal. Adjust cornstarch and water ratios for desired sauce thickness. Fresh garlic is recommended for best flavor.

Storage

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Freeze skewers and sauce separately for up to 2 months. Reheat in the oven, on the grill, or microwave sauce until warm.
