Equipment

  • small saucepan
  • grill
  • bowl

Ingredients

Teriyaki Sauce

  • 1 tsp olive or vegetable oil or part sesame oil
  • small piece fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 2-3 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • ½ cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • optional squirt sriracha or 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • optional toasted sesame seeds

Burgers

  • 2.5-3 lb 85% lean ground beef
  • eggs
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 2 Tbsp A-1 steak sauce or BBQ sauce
  • Panko or regular bread crumbs

Toppings

  • Grilled pineapple
  • thick slice red onion
  • toasted potato bun

Instructions

Sauce Preparation

  • Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add ginger and garlic, then heat for a few minutes to infuse the oil.
  • Add brown sugar and honey, stir, then pour in soy sauce and rice wine vinegar. Simmer for several minutes for a thinner sauce, or 15-20 minutes for a thicker glaze, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken as it cools.

Burger Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix ground beef with eggs, salt, pepper, steak sauce or BBQ sauce, and bread crumbs until just combined and moist. Shape into 4-5 oz patties, pressing gently to ensure they hold together.

Cooking and Assembly

  • Grill the burger patties to your desired doneness. Immediately after removing from the grill, brush generously with the prepared teriyaki sauce.
  • Serve the teriyaki burgers on toasted potato buns, topped with grilled pineapple and red onion slices.

Notes

The teriyaki sauce is versatile and can also be used with chicken or salmon. For best results, press burger patties gently to prevent them from falling apart on the grill. Sriracha, red pepper flakes, and sesame seeds are optional additions to the sauce.
