Equipment

  • 12-cup fluted tube cake pan
  • electric mixer
  • large bowl
  • small bowls
  • toothpick
  • cooling rack
  • waxed or parchment paper
  • microwavable bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 box Betty Crocker Super Moist White Cake Mix
  • Water, vegetable oil, and whole eggs (as specified on cake mix box)
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons red gel food color
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons blue gel food color
  • ½ cup Betty Crocker Rich & Creamy Vanilla Frosting
  • 2 teaspoons Red, White & Blue Sprinkles optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare a 12-cup fluted tube cake pan by spraying it with baking spray.
  • In a large bowl, beat the cake mix, water, oil, and eggs with an electric mixer for 2 minutes until well combined.
  • Divide the batter into three bowls. Color one cup of batter red and another cup blue using the gel food coloring. Leave the remaining batter white.
  • Pour the red batter into the prepared pan, followed by the white batter, and then the blue batter, creating a ring in the center.
  • Bake for 39 to 44 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a cooling rack to cool completely, about 1 hour.
  • Microwave 1/4 cup of frosting for 10-15 seconds until thin enough to drizzle and drizzle it over the cooled cake in a striping pattern.
  • Divide the remaining frosting, color one portion red and the other blue, and microwave each for 5-10 seconds until thin. Drizzle both colors over the cake.
  • Sprinkle with candy sprinkles if desired and let stand for 30 minutes for the frosting to set.

Notes

Sprinkles are optional. Ensure the blue batter forms a ring in the center of the white batter for the best visual effect. Microwave frosting until thin before drizzling and store the cake loosely covered at room temperature.
