Equipment

  • Coffee grinder
  • Large jar or storage container
  • Fine mesh sieve
  • Cheesecloth or coffee filters

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole coffee beans medium to dark roast recommended; any variety including decaf, espresso, or light roast works
  • 8 cups filtered water

Instructions

  • Grind coffee beans to a coarse consistency, similar to rough sand.
  • Combine the ground coffee and filtered water in a large jar or container. Secure the lid and shake well to ensure everything is mixed.
  • Refrigerate the mixture for a steeping period of 24 to 48 hours.
  • Strain the coffee mixture through a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth or a coffee filter into a clean container. Repeat straining if necessary to remove all coffee grounds.
  • Serve the cold brew immediately or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 weeks.

Notes

Steeping time can be extended beyond 48 hours for a stronger brew. Strain multiple times to ensure removal of grounds and residue. Cold brew can be heated after brewing without altering acidity levels. Decaf coffee beans are suitable for this recipe. Finely ground coffee may result in difficult filtering; a coarser grind is recommended. A French press can be used with the same water-to-coffee ratio. For cold brew concentrate, use a 1:4 ratio (1 cup coffee beans to 4 cups water). Recipe can be halved for a small batch (1/2 cup beans, 4 cups water). Adjust ratios based on personal preference for strength.
