Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup firmly packed fresh basil leaves
  • 6 cups water, divided
  • 1 ½ cups freshly squeezed lemon juice from 6 to 8 lemons
  • Lemon slices and fresh basil for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Combine sugar and basil leaves in a medium saucepan.
  • Add 2 cups of water and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the sugar dissolves.
  • Remove from heat and allow the mixture to steep until cool.
  • Strain the syrup into a pitcher.
  • Add the remaining 4 cups of water and the lemon juice.
  • Stir well.
  • Serve over ice with a garnish of lemon slices and fresh basil.

Notes

Recipe can be adapted to make traditional lemonade by omitting the basil. Roll lemons on a counter before juicing to release juices.
